What the climate is like in Mar del Plata
Mar del Plata has a temperate oceanic climate: the Atlantic keeps temperatures mild all year round, so summers are pleasant without long heat waves and winters are cool but rarely freezing. According to the 1991-2020 climate normals of Argentina’s National Weather Service (SMN), the average annual temperature is about 14 °C (57 °F), the average high in January is around 26 °C (79 °F) and in July around 13 °C (55 °F).
Rain is spread fairly evenly through the year: about 946 mm annually over roughly 105 rainy days. Average relative humidity is high (around 78 %), typical of a seaside city, which makes winter feel colder than the thermometer says. Local tip: always bring a light jacket, even in summer, because the temperature can drop quickly when the wind turns and blows from the sea.

Weather by season
Summer (December to March): beach season, with average highs of 25-26 °C, lows around 13-14 °C and more than 8 hours of sunshine a day. North winds bring the hottest days; south or sea winds cool things down. UV is usually high to very high around midday, so pack sunscreen and a hat. February has the warmest water.
Autumn (March to June): March and much of April still have lovely beach days with fewer people. From May, highs of 14-17 °C make it ideal for coastal walks, the port and the city.
Winter (June to September): July is the coldest month, with average highs near 13 °C and lows of 3 °C. Hard frosts are uncommon thanks to the sea, but wind and humidity make it feel colder. Snow is very rare.
Spring (September to December): temperatures climb gradually (about 19 °C highs in October and 22 °C in November). It’s changeable, with sunny days mixed with windy or rainy ones, and the sea is still cold for swimming. A great time for conferences, sports events and short breaks.
Sea temperature and tides
The sea in Mar del Plata is cool: on average it reaches about 20-21 °C (68-70 °F) from January to March and drops to 10-11 °C (50-52 °F) between July and September. Always check the lifeguard flags before going in.
There are two high tides and two low tides a day, about six hours apart, and the times shift by roughly 50 minutes from one day to the next. Tides are larger around new and full moon (spring tides) and smaller around the quarter moons; strong southeast winds can push the water higher than forecast. Official high and low tide times are published in the tide tables of Argentina’s Naval Hydrographic Service (select Puerto Mar del Plata).
